Recently, during an interview, I was asked if I could provide one effective tip to commence 2015 with a strong start. I took some time to reflect on this. What most frequently brings my clients satisfaction during a coaching trajectory? The answer is straightforward: the establishment and pursuit of meaningful objectives.
Good intentions are futile. Or, as the adage states: the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Formulating good intentions is a form of wishful thinking, which yields no tangible results. Positive thinking is also ineffective; I apologize. Contrary to popular belief, during coaching sessions with entrepreneurs and executives, I engage more in active problem-solving than any other approach. I will elaborate on this later. Now, returning to your objectives for 2015.
What Constitutes Meaningful Goals?
Meaningful goals are simply objectives that bring you satisfaction. They are goals that align with your core values and significant life roles.
Values + Roles = Meaningful Goals
Therefore, if a core value for you is freedom and you aim to formulate a meaningful objective in your capacity as an employee or entrepreneur, you might consider the following:
1) As an Employee: I will reduce overtime without compromising productivity. The time gained will be dedicated to my family.
2) As an Entrepreneur: I will focus more on working on the business rather than in the business, thereby adopting a more detached role as a shareholder. The time gained will be allocated to travel.
How Do I Achieve My Meaningful Objectives?
To effectively achieve these objectives, I utilize the model of the 4 D's.
1) Dream
2) Goals
3) Obstacles
4) Blueprint.
Dream
Everything commences with a dream, a deeply rooted desire or need. What captivated you as an eight-year-old boy or girl? What would you pursue if external opinions were irrelevant? How would your life unfold if you pursued your intrinsic needs?
Goals
A dream without defined goals is pleasant, yet primarily serves for contemplation rather than actionable progress. For instance, if your aspiration is to reside abroad, a tangible goal would be to accumulate sufficient savings to bridge the income transition period from your current location to your international destination. A goal is a dream with a deadline.
Obstacles (i.e., Problem-Centric Thinking)
This is often where progress falters. It may appear proactive to assert that one should focus on challenges and solutions rather than problems, as if merely substituting terminology would yield substantive results. My counsel is: engage in problem identification. More precisely: meticulously consider all impediments and barriers that obstruct your path to achieving your objective. If your objective is financial independence, discontinuing an expensive habit, such as dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant three times weekly, could prove a more significant catalyst for success than speculative stock market investments.
Blueprint
You now possess a dream, a concrete objective, and an understanding of the impeding obstacles. It is now time to develop a concrete, written blueprint. This blueprint should explicitly detail how, when, and with whom you will undertake specific steps to actualize your dream.
Happy Holidays and a Prosperous New Year!
From this vantage point, I extend my wishes for an exceptional year in 2015. Always remember: the pinnacle of your life's journey still awaits. To conclude, here is an inspiring video on dreams and goals.
