Life According to TOM
A perpetually overloaded schedule, a family demanding attention, an incessantly ringing phone, and, to compound the predicament, a completely depleted battery—both physically and mentally. For many, this dire scenario represents their daily reality. Stressed and apprehensive of disappointing others, they rush from one appointment to the next, with no prospect of amelioration. They are, in essence, dictated by life itself.
A Pivotal Change
American businessman, bon vivant, and former workaholic, Tom, was among this substantial demographic. Fortunately, he recognized in due course that this trajectory was unsustainable and initiated a pivotal change. Tom is featured as an exemplar in Peter C. Whybrow's book, 'American Mania: Breaking the Manic Cycle'. Within this publication, TOM reveals the four guiding principles of his eponymous TOM method.
TOM = Toward Optimum Mindfulness
TOM stands for Toward Optimum Mindfulness; loosely translated as 'the path to optimal relaxed attention'. Beyond offering a fresh perspective on modern time management, this is fundamentally a life philosophy designed to help restore equilibrium in one's life and re-cultivate appreciation for the inherent beauty life offers daily. The principles of TOM are straightforward and effective, yet simultaneously profound and comprehensive. To fully embrace and benefit from the present moment, one must first master the management of available time, technology, dietary habits, and physical activity. For the perpetually hurried modern individual, this is often easier said than done.
Principle 1 – Time is Precious. Utilize it Wisely
Our time is a finite and scarce resource, rendering it exceptionally valuable. Time is the new currency. It is therefore imperative to cherish, safeguard, and, above all, meaningfully utilize the time we possess. Regrettably, the exigencies of daily life frequently demand more time than is available, consequently making dedicated family time a rarity. Driven by a sense of guilt, we attempt to schedule 'quality time', often without success. A more effective approach is to optimize the time spent together, which entails being open, relaxed, and fully attentive to one another. In this manner, every moment becomes significant. Furthermore, if during yet another business dinner, we were to dedicate more attention to evaluating the utility of this time investment, rather than constantly checking the clock out of guilt, the realization that this constitutes an unproductive use of time would naturally emerge. For by engaging with life in the present moment in a relaxed and authentic manner, our true priorities are illuminated.
Principle 2 – Master Technology
Undivided attention is, therefore, paramount. However, this proves challenging in the current technological era. Mobile phones ensure perpetual accessibility, if not directly, then through SMS, WhatsApp, or email. And, dutifully, we respond to all of it. Not to mention the barrage of advertisements disseminated via television, radio, and the internet. Unbeknownst to us, we are 'over-demanded' even within our own homes. The critical question to pose is: are you serving technology, or is technology serving you? Consequently, utilize only the technology essential for fulfilling your personal priorities. Therefore, periodically switch off your mobile phone, defer email checks until after the weekend, and consider dedicating an evening to a television-free environment.

Principle 3 – Practice Mindful Eating and Communal Dining
Historically, eating has been a social activity that demands dedicated time. Regrettably, contemporary lifestyles often preclude such dedication. Individuals frequently opt for 'on-the-go' consumption or even skip entire meals. Our physiological cues are often overridden by scheduling imperatives. Consequently, when hunger becomes acute, we tend to rapidly overconsume whatever is readily available. This practice not only diminishes the intrinsic pleasure of dining but also poses significant health risks. Rapid ingestion prevents the stomach from signaling satiety effectively, leading to excessive intake. Therefore, a balanced and low-fat dietary regimen is imperative. Avoid snacking between meals. Consume food only when genuinely hungry! Furthermore, allocate ample time for meals and consistently engage in communal dining. Savor each bite with heightened sensory awareness. This approach fosters a renewed appreciation for culinary quality, enhances social interaction during meals, and re-establishes somatic control.
Principle 4 – Cultivate Reverence for Your Physique
In an era characterized by demanding schedules and limited time, physical activity is frequently the first commitment to be neglected. Yet, adequate physical exertion is a fundamental prerequisite for maintaining optimal personal equilibrium. Therefore, integrate it purposefully into your daily regimen. Consider parking further from your workplace, utilizing stairs more frequently, and conducting meetings outdoors when feasible. In essence, capitalize on every opportunity to enhance physical mobility. Conversely, it is equally crucial to prioritize periods of rest. Consequently, schedule travel and appointments with ample buffer time. This mitigates stress arising from unforeseen delays on the road or at the airport. Leverage these intervals specifically for relaxation and rejuvenation. Resist the impulse to rush, and extend this protective approach to your children. They do not require simultaneous enrollment in football, tennis, swimming, scouting, and music lessons. The emphasis should unequivocally be on quality over mere quantity.
Cultivate Awareness of Your Decisions
Within the prevailing hyper-consumerist society, the cornerstone of a successful and fulfilling life resides in making judicious choices. This necessitates a prior understanding of one's authentic desires and essential needs. While often a straightforward process of logical reasoning and introspection, it inherently demands dedicated time for self-reflection. It is precisely this critical aspect that is frequently overlooked. Therefore, decelerate, cultivate awareness of your decisions, embrace present-moment living, and, above all, immerse yourself fully in the experience of enjoyment.
